It is certainly fitting that the team at Rise City Swim first met Amrit Sidhu at our Women on the Rise campaign launch at the Dream Downtown back in May. A DJ and events coordinator, Amrit was in large parts responsible for making the event such a blast; her masterful work at the turntables kept the party light and fun – and going late into the night.
Once we got a chance to steal the gorgeous Aussie away from the DJ booth for a chat, we realized that she embodies all the traits that make a #womanontherise. A Brooklyn resident these days, Amrit travels the world to pursue her love of music and is currently working on her debut album. She has been able to turn her passion into a career – and a very successful one at that.
So we scheduled a meet-up with Amrit at the rooftop of her apartment building and not only got her thoughts on what it’s like being her own boss and when she feels her best, but also took some gorgeous shots of Amrit rocking a Rise City Swim bikini – of course styled with her own personal, chic touches. Oh, and we couldn't help but pick her brain on the hottest new artists we should be listening to right now. Read on for our full Q&A.
Rise City Swim: What keeps you busy Monday through Friday?
Amrit Sidhu: Everything. I work for myself, so my Monday through Friday is more like Sunday through Sunday! As well as managing all my DJ work, I also work as a freelance events coordinator for a hospitality group and am currently recording an album, so that’s been keeping me very busy.
RCS: What’s your idea of a day well spent?
AS: Anything that involves the trifecta of great food, excellent company, and good music is a day I can feel good about.
RCS: Speaking of music, what are you spinning right now?
AS: Tame Impala -- I’ve had this new album on repeat! I’ve also been listening to this girl ABRA a lot lately. She self-produced her last project, ROSE, and it’s one of the best things I’ve heard all year. I also listen to M.I.A on the daily; she is my all-time favorite artist.
RCS: You’re a world traveler. What are your favorite things about New York City?
AS: The city is full of endless possibilities and opportunities. But next on my travel bucket list is a vacation to India. I want to trek from Delhi to Kathmandu, stay at an ashram, and take some cooking classes.
Amrit on Staying Focused and Grounded:
Remember why you started, but never forget where you came from.
RCS: What is your proudest accomplishment?
AS: I’ve never regretted quitting my “real job” and leaving my hometown to travel the world and pursue my love of music full time.
RCS: What have been your biggest challenges in creating your brand and image?
AS: I’ve had to lose my expectations of instant gratification, and just focus on staying true to myself and sticking to the belief in my creative vision.
RCS: What advice do you have for other young women?
AS: It’s important to remember why you started, and never forget where you came from.
RCS: When do you feel your best?
AS: I feel my best when I am around the people I love or doing the things I love, like making music or playing a gig. At the Rise City Swim shoot, everyone made me feel so comfortable and the dynamic was so great – good vibes all around!
