Hillary Hawthorne

Posted on 06 April 2016

Meet Hillary Hawthorne, the Richmond transplant (now more of an NYC “local”) who is in the midst of launching her own interior design firm after many years of working for renowned Manhattan-based designers. A Woman on the Rise? For sure. Creating her website may regularly keep her up till 3 AM, but Hillary embraces the challenge – and makes sure to carve out time for relaxing with friends, working out, and traveling, the latter being her best source of inspiration. And we have a feeling her story will inspire you.

What keeps you busy Monday through Friday?

Working and getting inspired -- some days I'm drafting furniture plans and designing furniture on the computer. Other days, I'm out shopping or visiting job sites overseeing construction or installations. The great thing about interior design is that every day is a little different and I'm not always just sitting behind a computer.

What have been your biggest challenges in creating your brand and image?

I've worked for prominent interior design and architecture firms in NYC for the past 10 years and have learned so much. I now know a lot about myself as a designer and my own personal aesthetic. I've had my business and small projects on my own since 2010, but it's exciting to finally be working for myself full time. I'm in the process of launching my website and the most challenging part is making sure my design capabilities and aesthetic come through.

What’s your idea of a day well spent?

Accomplishing something with work, getting inspired or learning something new pertaining to design, working out, and having a great dinner with friends.

What’s your favorite thing about NYC?

So many things! I love that there is always something new and fun to do. From a design perspective, it's amazing to have access to so many great resources right in the city. I'm lucky that I've been able to work on innovative projects that push the envelope. If there is something new happening in the design world, it's definitely happening in New York.

Hillary on Building a Business:

Be kind, but stay assertive and work hard.

When do you feel your best?

When I'm being creative -- whether it's putting together a design scheme for work or traveling and taking hundreds of photos… I'm a bit of a perfectionist and almost get a high when I see a project come together or capture the perfect photo.

What advice do you have for other young women?

Be kind, but stay assertive and work hard.

What was your RCS shoot experience like?

Very fun and positive – but cold! We shot outside in February, but I can't complain. I loved the suit I wore -- it was a slate gray that I think looks good on blondes. It was also very comfortable. Because of the design, I wouldn't have to worry about it coming off if I was swimming in the ocean or surfing.

What’s next?

Continuing to launch my business. I'd also love to get more into furniture design and I hope to do a lot more traveling this year.  It's the best way to get inspired!
